Message from the Imam
Assalamu alaikum,
I hope you are doing fine during this sacred month of Muharram 1430 hijri.
ICSD is reminding you about the virtue of fasting the 10th day of Muharram which is “Ashura”.
Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “I never saw Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of `Ashura’, and this month, meaning Ramadan.” (Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1867).
In another hadith we are told that fasting the day of `Ashura’ expiates the sins of the previous year as the Prophet (pbuh) said, “Fasting the day of `Ashura’ (is of great merits), I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year” (Muslim).
After the hijrah when the Prophet (pbuh) came to Madinah, he found that the Jews of Madinah also used to observe this day with fasting. The Prophet (pbuh) asked them the reason of their fasting on this day. They said, “This is a blessed day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa fasted on this day giving thanks to Allah.” The Prophet (pbuh) said, “We have more claim to Musa than you.” He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari, hadith 1865)
This year, the day of Ashura comes in a time our Muslim ummah is witnessing one of the most brutal attacks against innocent civilians in Gaza, Palestine. Therefore, we urge all our fellow Muslims to fast the day of Ashura (Wednesday Jan. 7th) and make a sincere Duaa at the time of Maghrib for the wellbeing of the Gazans and all the oppressed people in the world.
ICSD also will provide soup, milk and dattes for breaking the fast. Please, bring a dish to share with your community members after Maghrib prayer.
May Allah almighty accept our good deeds, forgive our sins, and ease the situation in Gaza, amin.
May Allah bless you all as well as your families.
